Another similarity in chess is that each unit has a role to fill, armored units acts as a rook they are good defensive unit that protect the king from the enemy by blocking the spaces with it body.
Fire Emblem also takes inspiration for Dungeon and Dragons (D&D). Leveling up is a staple of Fire Emblem and D&D. Units in the game gain experience and grow stronger to take on stronger foes. Being a small band of skilled heroes against a large number of weak foes.
What separates Fire Emblem from Chess and D&D is the cleaver writing in the games. Each unit have their own story in the games and chemistry with other characters. Many characters like Marcia who is on a mission to find her brother who has accumulated a ton of debt. Makalov the brother of Marcia, can later be found on a later map and recruited by Marcia.
